A fabulous print by Ray Morimura: 藤の天神橋 (Wisteria at Tenjinbashi). Beautifully cascading wisteria hang over the great arched bridge of Kameido Tenjin Shrine, one of Tokyo’s best-known spring views - a subject long celebrated in ukiyo-e by artists including Hokusai and Hiroshige. Morimura fills the upper half of the image with pale blossom, while the warm vermilion bridge and its reflection anchor the pond below. A stunningly detailed contemporary view of a historic Edo landmark. 🌸🌉

- Notes: The scene depicts Kameido Tenjin Shrine in eastern Tokyo, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deified scholar and patron of learning. The shrine’s arched red taiko bridge was designed in the tradition of Dazaifu Tenmangū, while its wisteria has been celebrated for centuries and continues to draw visitors each spring. Hokusai depicted the bridge around 1830, and Hiroshige later included Kameido Tenjin in his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, giving the site a particularly strong place in the history of Japanese landscape printmaking.
