Junko Hanahara - あかるいうちから (While It’s Still Light Out…)

Sale price£360.00

    Contemporary Woodblock Print

A fabulous print by Junko Hanahara titled あかるいうちから (While It’s Still Light Out…) 🍺. Inside a packed neighbourhood bar, regulars cluster around small tables while the afternoon is still bright outside. A familiar older woman in an INADA (the name of the izakaya (稲田)) apron threads through the room with practiced ease, bottles in hand. An elderly man raises his arm in greeting, another leans back mid-story, while others drink quietly, watching the room unfold. Through the open frontage, figures pass by on the street, momentarily framed by hanging noren and handwritten signs. The scene captures that particular hour when the day is not yet finished, but the first drinks have already settled in. An incredible piece of very small edition - full of detail to be discovers & poured over.

    • Year & Edition: 2018. Edition of 5. (signed, titled, & editioned in pencil).
    • Medium: Woodblock.
    • Dimensions: Sheet H 66.25 cm × W 48.25 cm. Image H 58.00 cm × W 40.50 cm.
    • Condition: Direct from the artist’s studio.
    • Notes: The title While It’s Still Light Out… speaks to the pleasure of starting early - an afternoon drink that quietly turns into an extended gathering. Hanahara fills the composition with recognisable personalities and gentle humour, celebrating places where time stretches, faces are familiar, and the street outside continues to flow past.

    About the Artist

Born and raised in Osaka, Junko Hanahara is a contemporary Japanese woodblock printmaker whose work centres on the city’s izakaya culture - standing bars, after-work drinks, and familiar faces gathered in everyday routines. Working in the traditional ukiyo-e method with layered blocks, she builds lively scenes from direct observation rather than photographs. Her focus on ordinary gatherings reflects a belief that these small, shared pleasures matter deeply, especially in a world where daily life can change overnight. Regularly selected for Japan Print Association exhibitions and a full member since 2024, she has shown in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, with further selections by CWAJ.
