Gihachiro Okuyama - 馬そり (Horse-Drawn Sleigh)

Sale price£120.00

Modern | Sōsaku Hanga Woodblock Print

Gihachiro Okuyama’s circa 1950s/60s woodblock print “馬そり (Horse Sleigh)” depicts a logging horse - likely Hokkaido’s hardy 道産子 (Dosanko) breed - hauling freshly felled timbers through a silent, snow-blanketed landscape. Bare trees and drifting snowdrifts evoke the quiet perseverance of rural winter work. ❄️🐎🌲

    • Year & Edition: circa 1950s/60s · Seal “Gihachi.”
    • Medium: Woodblock.
    • Dimensions: Sheet H: 24.00 cm × W: 12.00 cm.
    • Condition: Excellent; please refer to photos / contact for condition report.
    • Notes: This intimate scene offers a window into Japan’s logging traditions, where Dosanko horses and their keepers navigated snowy forestry roads long before mechanized transport. Okuyama captures the muscle and calm determination of the horse alongside the delicate tracery of young orchard or coppice trees, celebrating a quietly vanishing way of life.

    About the Artist

Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981) moved seamlessly between sōsaku-hanga and shin-hanga, pairing self-carved monochrome impressions with vibrant collaborative colour prints. Trained by Kosaka Gajin and ukiyo-e master Ishii Kendō, he fused bold modern graphics with classical technique. After the war he founded the Japan Print Institute and his Matsudo studio; his own prints - and woodblock homages to Hiroshige and Van Gogh - now appear in major museum collections worldwide.
