Modern | Sōsaku Hanga Woodblock Print
Katsuyuki Nishijima’s woodblock print “大湫” (Okute, Gifu) surveys the overlapping tile roofs of the Nakasendō post town, the ridged eaves slipping into rice paddies and forested hills beyond. This view captures the 47th station’s quiet topography and its connection to centuries of travel along Japan’s inland route. 🏔️🏘️.

Two routes connected Edo (Tokyo) with Kyoto during the Edo Period (1603-1867); the inland mountainous trail of the Nakasendo 木曾街道 & a coastal travel route of the Tokaido road 木曾街道. One of 17 Nakasendo stations in Gifu prefecture; Okute is celebrated for its prefectural Natural Monument - a giant 1300 year-old Japanese Cedar tree which lies within the grounds of Okute Shinmei Shrine 大湫神明神社.
