Kaoru Saito - 裳礁の海 (Sea Reefs)

Sale price£160.00

    Modern | Sōsaku Hanga Mezzotint

Kaoru Saito’s 1981 mezzotint “裳礁の海 (Sea Reefs)” shows jagged shoreline stacks rising from dark water. Their folded white forms stand in sharp contrast to the black sea and sky, while waves break at their base and seabirds pass above. Saito’s mezzotint technique gives the rocks a sculptural presence and the scene a stark, graphic strength. 🌊🪶

    • Year & Edition: 1981 · Ed. of 80 (44/80) (signed & editioned in pencil to plate; titled & dated in pencil to margin).
    • Medium: Mezzotint.
    • Dimensions: Sheet H: 34.00 cm × W: 25.75 cm; Image H: 19.50 cm × W: 12.00 cm.
    • Condition: Beautiful; image face unblemished; paper clean, crisp & intact.
    • Notes: The Sea of Reefs is a rarer landscape subject within Kaoru Saito’s work, more often devoted to figures. Unlike Saito’s quieter, solemn figure studies, this dramatic seascape shows his technique applied to natural force, the sculptural rocks set against the movement of the sea.

    About the Artist

Kaoru Saito (1931-2021) was a master of Japanese mezzotint, celebrated for his graceful bijin-e portraits and poetic scenes from The Tale of Genji. His prints conjure a quiet, surreal world of stillness and introspection - marked by deep blacks, soft gradations, and a finely balanced sense of emotion. Trained under Fujita Tsuguharu, Tsuruta Goro, and Arai Tatsuo, Saito became a leading figure in postwar printmaking and a key member of the Shunyo-kai Art Society. [ ← View All Works by Kaoru Saito]
