Hiromitsu Takahashi - 助六A (Sukeroku A)

Sale price£240.00

    Contemporary | Kappazuri/Stencil Print

Hiromitsu Takahashi’s 1986 stencil print “助六A” (Sukeroku A) brings the swaggering kabuki hero Sukeroku to life, poised mid-drama with his vivid wagasa (和傘) unfurled behind him. Bold lines and striking colour - jet-black kimono (着物), cerulean hakama (袴) and colourful obi (帯) - evoke the flair and honour of Edo’s “Flower of Edo” tale. 🎭☂️.

    • Notes: Inspired by the kabuki play Sukeroku Yukari no Edo Zakura (助六縁江戸桜), this print captures Sukeroku’s gallant search for a stolen sword in the Yoshiwara (吉原) red-light district - an Edo-period saga of love, action and loyalty.

    About the Artist

Hiromitsu Takahashi (b. 1959, Kanagawa) is one of the last major artists working in kappazuri (型紙摺), Japan’s traditional stencil print technique. A contemporary figure deeply rooted in the post-war legacy of Yoshitoshi Mori and Serizawa Keisuke, he produces bold, hand-printed works inspired by Kabuki theatre, rendered on handmade washi paper. His editions are exceptionally limited—often fewer than twenty prints—reflecting a rare commitment to one of Japan’s most endangered printmaking traditions.
