Hiromitsu Takahashi - 勧進帳 (Kanjincho)

Sale price£240.00

    Contemporary | Kappazuri/Stencil Print

Hiromitsu Takahashi’s 1986 stencil print “勧進帳” (Kanjinchō) portrays the warrior-monk Musashibō Benkei (武蔵坊弁慶) and aristocratic Minamoto no Yoshitsune (源義経) in their ruse as travelling priests. Rendered in Takahashi’s bold kappazuri stencil style - with deep purple hakama (袴), fiery red kimono (着物) and stark black accents - their exaggerated expressions and dynamic poses capture the dramatic tension of this classic kabuki play. 🎭⛩️.

    About the Artist

Hiromitsu Takahashi (b. 1959, Kanagawa) is one of the last major artists working in kappazuri (型紙摺), Japan’s traditional stencil print technique. A contemporary figure deeply rooted in the post-war legacy of Yoshitoshi Mori and Serizawa Keisuke, he produces bold, hand-printed works inspired by Kabuki theatre, rendered on handmade washi paper. His editions are exceptionally limited—often fewer than twenty prints—reflecting a rare commitment to one of Japan’s most endangered printmaking traditions.
