Hiromitsu Takahashi - 雨の五郎 A (Goro in the Rain A)

Sale price£400.00

    Contemporary | Kappazuri/Stencil Print

Hiromitsu Takahashi’s stencil print “雨の五郎 A” (Goro in the Rain A) portrays the warrior-dancer Soga no Gorō from the famed Soga-mono (曽我物) revenge saga, captured mid-dance beneath a rain-spattered wagasa (和傘). Rendered in bold kappazuri stencil on fibrous Japanese washi paper, Gorō - also known as Tokimune (曾我時致) - stands in a headwrap and geta, sword at his side, clad in a jet-black coat, plum-purple hakama and rainbow obi (帯). The vivid pigments and dynamic composition honour the New-Year dance “Ame no Goro,” part of the Tale of the Soga Brothers (曽我物語), in which the brothers seek vengeance for their father’s murder. 🎭☔️.

    About the Artist

Hiromitsu Takahashi (b. 1959, Kanagawa) is one of the last major artists working in kappazuri (型紙摺), Japan’s traditional stencil print technique. A contemporary figure deeply rooted in the post-war legacy of Yoshitoshi Mori and Serizawa Keisuke, he produces bold, hand-printed works inspired by Kabuki theatre, rendered on handmade washi paper. His editions are exceptionally limited—often fewer than twenty prints—reflecting a rare commitment to one of Japan’s most endangered printmaking traditions. [ ← View All Works by Hiromitsu Takahashi]
