Haku Maki’s 1976 embossed woodblock print 76-2 (Wind-B) depicts the seal-script character for “wind” in a single, flowing stroke. A special piece where the embossed textured form bare's the natural colour of the paper (uninked), set against a beautifully contrasting black background. A yellow-gold teardrop "Splash"  balances Maki's composition beautifully. ☁️✨

• Notes: A fantastic, wonderful piece. Was 1976 a year where Maki focused more on larger designs? (Approx 65cm x 35cm paper sheets?). A lovely piece of work - fabulous embossing & texture, a perfectly balanced compositional “splash”, & late example where Maki was still working with Kanji forms.

About the Artist

Haku Maki (1924-200) was an influential Japanese printmaker known for merging traditional kanji and ancient Chinese seal scripts with abstract, modern compositions. A self-taught artist and wartime survivor, Maki gained international acclaim through innovative cement-relief embossing techniques and vibrant colours. His distinctive works - including series like Poem, Persimmons, and Festive Wine - are celebrated globally, combining deep cultural resonance with contemporary abstract aesthetics.
