Gihachiro Okuyama - 朝日岳 (Mt. Asahi)

Sale price£300.00

Modern | Sōsaku Hanga Woodblock Print

Gihachiro Okuyama’s mid-century Woodblock “朝日岳 (‘Mt. Asahi’)” captures Hokkaido’s highest peak - Asahidake - rising above swirling clouds and rugged foliage. Known as Kamui-mintara (“Playground of the Gods”) to the Ainu, this 7,516 ft active volcano anchors Daisetsuzan National Park, Japan’s largest. The print’s layered grays and stark silhouettes evoke alpine drama in both summer hikes and winter ski runs. 🏔️❄️

    • Year & Edition: Early 1950s; rare larger-sized pencil-signed edition 奥山儀八郎 (Okuyama Gihachiro jizuri); signed & titled in pencil to margins; artist seal lower right.
    • Medium: Woodblock.
    • Dimensions: Sheet H: 24.25 cm × W: 48.50 cm.
    • Condition: Good; light surface wrinkles consistent with age.
    • Notes: Asahidake dominates Daisetsuzan National Park, revered by the Ainu as Kamui-mintara and monitored as an active volcano by Japan’s Meteorological Agency. This striking scene celebrates both its sacred heritage and its appeal to hikers and skiers.

    About the Artist

Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981) moved seamlessly between sōsaku-hanga and shin-hanga, pairing self-carved monochrome impressions with vibrant collaborative colour prints. Trained by Kosaka Gajin and ukiyo-e master Ishii Kendō, he fused bold modern graphics with classical technique. After the war he founded the Japan Print Institute and his Matsudo studio; his own prints - and woodblock homages to Hiroshige and Van Gogh - now appear in major museum collections worldwide.
