Fumio Kitaoka’s 1985 Woodblock print “三河湾と海苔そだ (Mikawa Bay Nori Farming)” bathes Mikawa Bay in dawn’s golden light, as slender bamboo poles and seeded nori nets stretch toward the horizon and a lone boat drifts among them. A serene glimpse into Aichi’s centuries-old seaweed harvest. 🌊🌅🌿

- Notes: Mikawa Bay (三河湾), off Aichi Prefecture’s south coast, is one of Japan’s four principal nori-cultivation areas alongside the Ariake Sea, Seto Inland Sea and Tokyo Bay. Nori farming in Aichi began in 1854 in the Toyogawa River estuaries and evolved into today’s major production hub. Each autumn and winter, nets seeded with nori spores are anchored on bamboo poles across the bay’s shallow waters, where the seaweed matures before harvest, drying and distribution.
