A blue-grey wave breaks across Shiomi’s sharply perspective-drawn ochre ground, cutting through the rigid geometry beneath it. The curling water contrasts strongly with the deep earthen-red sky, while the wave itself is a particularly important and recurring motif within Shiomi’s wider work. 🌊

Year & Edition: 1998 · Artist Proof (A.P.) Shiomi presents familiar objects, motifs and symbols within a distinctive visual world of earthen reds, yellow ochres and sharply receding perspective. Mitate (見立て) centres on seeing something familiar in a new way, and here Shiomi reinterprets one of the most recognisable motifs in Japanese art within her own constructed space. The wave also has a wider significance within Shiomi’s work. Writing about her later wave imagery, she describes the repeated rising and falling of waves as reflecting the continual cycle of existence - the world and the self - while elsewhere connecting wave imagery with the vortex and strength of living things. In this early Mitate work, the natural movement of the water cuts across the ordered perspective beneath it, bringing those ideas of movement and repetition into particularly simple form.

About the Artist

Nana Shiomi (b. 1956, Osaka) is a Japanese printmaker best known for her 見立て百景 (One Hundred Views of Mitate) series. Trained at Tama Art University and the Royal College of Art, Shiomi combines traditional Japanese woodblock methods with a contemporary approach to familiar cultural motifs, exploring ideas of reflection, reversal and mitate - seeing one thing through another. Her work is held by the Victoria & Albert Museum and British Museum, and in 2025 she was awarded Life Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in recognition of her contribution to printmaking. [ ← View All Works by Nana Shiomi]
