A quiet winter landscape emerges almost entirely through shades of white, silver-grey and soft charcoal, with a small stand of dark trees set against the pale form of a snow-covered mountain. Shiomi uses the whiteness of the paper as an active part of the image, allowing snow, sky and ground to merge into one another and creating one of the most atmospheric and restrained compositions in the series.❄️

Year & Edition: 2002 · Trial Proof (T.P.) Mitate (見立て) refers to the practice of seeing something familiar in a new way, or finding another meaning within an established image or motif. In Snow, Shiomi moves away from the characteristic deep reds and ochres seen throughout much of the series, instead reducing the landscape to an exceptionally subtle range of whites and greys. Snow has long been an important seasonal subject within Japanese art and poetry, but here it becomes almost abstract: landscape, mountain and sky dissolve into one another, leaving only the dark trees to anchor the scene. This impression is additionally inscribed T.P. (Trial Proof) rather than numbered from the standard edition.

About the Artist

Nana Shiomi (b. 1956, Osaka) is a Japanese printmaker best known for her 見立て百景 (One Hundred Views of Mitate) series.
